SUNSCREEN - Must have a good sunscreen with high Sun Protection Factor ("SPF").
MAP - Have a basic map of the location or locations you will be visiting.
POCKETKNIFE - No sheath knives! Multi-purpose (Swiss Army-type) knives are the most practical.
TRAIL FOOD - Try to avoid salt or sugary snacks . These will just make you thirsty on a long hike.
MATCHES - To be used with emergency fire starter kit. Waterproof, please.
FLASHLIGHT - A small Mag-lite with extra batteries and spare bulb, or a lightweight LED headlamp. A headband flashlight holder is handy to have with a Mag-lite to free your hands at night.
WATER/ WATER BOTTLE– A small, non breakable water bottle with a wide mouth is the best. Make sure your bottle is clean and try to use bottled water from the store if you can to avoid foul taste.
RAIN GEAR– You can buy one time ponchos or bring some large green trash bags. You can cut a large hole in the bottom and sides for your head and arms for an instant rain slicker.
EXTRA CLOTHING– Roll your extra clothing up and put into plastic bags so they stay dry in your backpack.. Use the bags to store dirty clothes during your camp trip.
FIRST AID KIT– This should include the things you wouldn’t think of besides Band aids. Try to remember to bring non aerosol bug spray, Chap stick or Lib Balm, and gauze in case of a severe cut or scrape. |
