White, L. D.
LAST: White FIRST: L. MID: D.
GENDER: M MAIDEN NAME: TITLE: Mr.
BORN: 29 Oct 1826 DIED: 19 Mar 1889 BURIED: 21 Mar 1889
ETHNIC: OCCUPATION: Lumber Mill Superintendant
BIRTH PLACE : Tioga Co., Pennsylvania
DEATH PLACE: Salem, Marion Co., Oregon
NOTES:
IOOF - L. D. White, age 63 y's 4 m's 10 d's, died in Salem, head sawyer at Capital mills;
OBITUARY:
At his residence on State street in Salem, Oregon, on Tuesday evening, March 19th, 1889, L. D. White, after an illness of but one week's duration.
This announcement of the death of one of the most substantial and highly respected citizens of Salem will bring heartfelt sorrow to all who have known him during his long residence in this city.
Mr. White was born in Tioga county, Pennsylvania, on the 29th day of October, 1826. In early life he went to the state of New York, where, with a zeal and industry which was always characteristic of him, he worked his way through school, and then, feeling himself fully equipped for the battle of life, started for California, where he remained for several years. In 1852, he went to Australia. After a residence there of ten years, he returned to New York and afterwards went to Minnesota. He came to Salem in June, 1874. In 1875 he purchased an interest in the Capitol Lumbering Co., and has since been the superintendent of their mill at this place.
Mr. White was never an aspirant for office at any time, but was chosen a member of the city council of Salem in 1882, in which capacity he rendered faithful service fro two years.
He was married to his now bereaved widow on the 3rd of March, 1869, and but a few days since they celebrated their 20th anniversary of their marriage.
He became in early life a member of the Baptist church, and while not actively connected with it in recent years, his entire source in life was that of an earnest and constant Christian gentleman. He was an open, outspoken honest man who detested shams, and whose whole life was an open book that everyone might read. No truer man or better citizen ever lived, and the sorrow that is felt at his death is deepened with the reflection that after a life of almost unremitting toil he has been called away just as he was reaching a point where he could secure a well deserved rest and enjoy the fruits of his labors.
Mr. White was for many years a member of Chemeketa Lodge No. 1, I. O. O. F., and of Salem Lodge No. 4, A. F. & A. F.
His funeral will take place under the auspices of the Masonic order on Thursday at 1:30 o'clock.
Daily Oregon Statesman 20 Mar 1889 4:3.

At two o'clock this afternoon, from the family residence on State street, was conducted the funeral ceremonies of Mr. L. D. White. The funeral was conducted by the Masonic brotherhood, and was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased and his family.
