Agricultural Infrastructure Project

Oregon's Goal 3 of the Statewide Planning Goals and Exclusive Farm Use statutes underscore the importance of maintaining our state's agricultural lands. However, the protection of farmland is much more than a question of acres. It is also a question of "critical mass."

The Agriculture Infrastructure Project is working to answer questions about critical mass for Oregon's farm economy.

No one knows precisely how many acres of production are needed to sustain agricultural processors, implement dealers, farmers markets, and other farm-related businesses in a region. We need this information to help government make informed decisions that balance the need to protect farmland with the needs for non-agricultural lands for such uses as housing.
