Judi's Hobby: Dogs

Updated 5/22/99
Judi has shown and trained dogs for more than 35 years. Never having more than one or two dogs at a time, Judi has still accumulated 9 obedience titles including 1 UD and 9 breed championships. Judi also competed in Retriever field trials and tracking tests.

Judi showed her first dog, a Pomeranian, at a fun match when she was 8 years old. Judi than competed in 4-H and American Kennel Club shows with a Golden Retriever, Robin the Vik O'Gold, CDX. Robbie was trained to Utility level, but Judi went away to college before she could enter any shows in Utility with him. Judi and Robbie competed against Carolyn Ellis (now Wray) and Keeshond CH Tryon's Pound Sterling, CDX. Others helping Judi learn about dogs in those early years were Jean Ellis (Tryon Keeshonden), Bud Finch (Prides' Collies), Wes Cartwright, George Ellison, and George Springer (Obedience).

Judi took obedience lessons from David Elizares, one of the Pacific Northwest's finest trainers, showmen and instructors with several generations of keeshonden. Besides training her own dogs, Judi trained several other breeds for individuals including an Alaskan Malamute, Fox Terrier, and a Dalmation. Judi no longer trains dogs for others. Judi occasionally teaches obedience, puppy kindergarten and conformation handling for specialty clubs.

Judi bought her first Keeshond in 1975, a pet bitch, Baggins from Maywood Kennels. Baggins slipped her collar and was struck by a car before Judi could call her back.

Judi then visited a show and met Judy Daugherty and Helen Wymore of Cascadia Keeshonden. At that first show, Judi watched Porter Washington andCH Flakkee Jackpot go Best in Show. After visiting Judy Daugherty's and Helen Wymore's homes, Judi bought a puppy from them. He became CH. Cascadia Country Gentleman J "Jake" was by CH Tryon's Beorn out of Tryons Ms. Got Wrocks, a Wrocky Selznick daughter.

Since then, Judi has owned, trained and loved several Keeshonden including CH Cascadia Puff O'Smoke CDX; CH Cascadia Hawkeye CD; CH Cascadia Go for the Gusto CD; CH Cascadia Primitive UD, all Beorn children. She currently shares her life with three show bitches. Judi also shares several more dogs with Helen and others. Judi helped Judy and Helen to evaluate, groom, condition, train and show many other promising Cascadia puppies. Since Judy Daugherty's death, Judi is taking a new direction as RainKee.
