Eagle Project - Ryan S.

Troop 15 re-constructed part of the exercise trail in Orchard Heights Park. For this we made a drainage ditch on the uphill side of the trail, resurfaced and crowned the trail with 10 yards of ¾ minus gravel, and put a gravel pad around one of the exercise equipment that is next to the bad part of the trail.

Who will it benefit?

It will benefit the community of West Salem, Oregon and the users of Orchard Heights Park.

Address: Orchard Heights Park, West Salem

This project will be of benefit to this group because:

It will reconstruct an unsafe eroded portion of a hiking trail and repair it so it is safe for park visitors to use for hiking and jogging.

PLANNING DETAILS
Describe the present condition (before) :

There is approximately 150 ft of the nature/exercise trail in Orchard Heights Park that has been severely eroded and needs to be repaired. Water has come off the hill and on to the trail, washing away the gravel. The trail is eroded in ruts over 10 inches deep in several areas.

The method and materials to be used:

We will dig a new drainage ditch for the water to drain through along the uphill side of the trail. For this we will need shovels.

We will resurface and crown the trail with 10 yards of ¾ minus gravel. For this part, we will need the gravel, wheelbarrows, and rakes.

I will get the gravel delivered to the site (delivery coordinated with Mr. Harry Garabedian of Salem Parks and Recreation). I will first attempt to get donations of the gravel. If donations are not available, I will contact Mr. Harry Garabedian and look into other methods to obtain the gravel.

I will borrow wheel barrows and shovels from Salem Parks and Recreation.

Project helpers:

I will use about 8+ Boy Scouts from Troop 15 to help out.

Time schedule:

I would like to begin work on Saturday, October 18th 1997. (note: this was later changed to November, and the project was completed in the month of November)

Safety hazards:

The wheelbarrows and shovels could be potentially dangerous if one does not know how to use it properly.

How to ensure safety of workers carrying out the project:

Make sure no one throws there back out with the wheelbarrows. Hopefully, the gravel will not be very far.
