Notes of Robert Covert [deceased]:

Teunis Janssen Covert was born about 1620 in Loemel, in the south of
Holland. This area is now part of Belgium and strengthens my conjecture that
Teunis was descended from French Huegenots fleeing persecution and seeking
protection in Holland. They very likely were from one of the northern
provinces of France: Normandy, Picardy or Bretagne.

Teunis was living in Heemstede, Noord Holland at the time of his late
December, 1645 marriage to Barbara Lucas van Kessel at Swaegh, a village
outside of Hoorn where Barbara was born. Barbara had been living in Amsterdam
prior to their marriage but they settled in Heemstede where their first four
children were born.

Teunis' and Barbara's next two children were baptized in New Amsterdam in
1653 and 1654 which indicates they resided there before moving to Brooklyn
where the last three of their nine children were born. Earlier accounts of the
family had Teunis, Barbara and Lucas Teunise all arriving in Brooklyn in 1651
but that is not factual. Teunis and Barbara arrived in New Amsterdam aboard
the Raritan in 1651 and Lucas followed 12 years later, arriving in Brooklyn
with Hans, Jannetje and Aechtje.

Teunis was a magistrate in Brooklyn and, on 9 Feb 1661 was elected a
deacon in the Dutch Reformed Church. On 21 Feb 1663 he was elected an elder of
the church. In later years they removed to Bedford where they spent the
remainder of their time. A baptism record for one of Lucas' children in 1692
had Teunis and Barbara as witnesses. That is the last written record of Teunis
that we have so we can presume he died before Barbara who was recorded as
selling some property in 1699. A woman who sold property in those days was
almost always a widow. Thus we can gauge Teunis' death as between 1692/98 and
Barbara as after 1699. While in Brooklyn, they lived on the Markier plantation
which was the property Barbara sold in 1699.

Teunis and his three sons Lucas, Hans (John) and Mauritz took the oath of
allegiance to the King of England during the last week in September, 1687, in
Brooklyn. This was required of all able bodied males of a certain age.
