Hillary Clinton to run for New York Senator

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton said on Wednesday he was delighted his wife has decided to run for the U.S. Senate, would do anything he could to help her and was reconciled to the possibility of their living apart next year.

"I think it's wonderful,'' Clinton told reporters in the White House Rose Garden a day after first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton declared her intentions to squelch weeks of questions about whether she would run and criticism over her indecision.

"I'm excited for her. If I can help her in any way I will,'' Clinton added, saying his wife simply said publicly what she had told him in private for weeks. "Apparently there was some concern, so I thought it was a good thing to clear it up.''

Mrs. Clinton on Tuesday ended months of speculation about whether she would become the first president's wife to run for office and said she would move to the $1.7 million home the couple bought in suburban Chappaqua, New York as soon as it was deemed secure by the Secret Service.

The decision means she and the president will live apart for at least some of his final year in the White House as she campaigns in a race that is widely expected to pit her against Republican New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
