Genetically Engineered Foods
Today, I heard on the radio a story about genetically engineered foods, where they are planning to combine the genes of a strawberry with the genes of a halibut. The purpose of this gene splicing is to give the strawberry the cold resistance of the halibut. This leads me to a few thoughts:- Would this new food be a fruit or a protein?
- Does it count as both in your balanced diet of all 4 food groups?
- Couldn't they add in some wheat and cow genes, then I'd only have to eat one thing to have a balanced diet?
- Will the strawberry be red on one side and pink on the other?
- Will the strawberry try to swim away when you wash it?
- We'll know it's gone too far when the thing gets two eyes on one side.
- An added benefit will be that the strawberrys grow flat, and so can be stacked more efficiently.
- You know how when food is bad, and you give it to the dog, and the dog won't eat it? Well now, the insects won't even eat it.
- How are we going to dispose of this stuff? You can't put it in a compost pile, since food is composted by the little insects that eat the food and turn it into waste...
- Wasn't the Africanized bee the result of this same kind of thing? Making the bee resistent to disease?
- Is this going to create an endangered species?
- I can see it now.... We can't tear down that old dilapidated building, it's the last building in the area that doesn't have the cockroach inhibitor spliced into the wood...
November 19th, 1999
Today is the last odd numbered day for a long time...All the numbers in the date, 1,9,11,19 and 1999 are all odd numbers. The next time all the numbers in a date will all be odd is November 11th, 3111 (1,3,11 and 3111). January 1st isn't because it's 01, and 0 is even. The last even date was on August 28th, 888 (0,2,8,28,888), the next even date will be February 2nd, 2000 (0,2,2000). As if you cared...
